The Cerrado is the most biodiverse savanna on the planet. It is home to more than 12,000 plant species, 250 mammal species, 850 bird species, 1,200 fish species, and hundreds of reptiles and amphibians. This impressive diversity makes the Cerrado a unique natural heritage.

The headwaters of 8 out of Brazil's 12 river basins are located in the Cerrado. These waters supply millions of people throughout Brazil, including the productive sectors of industry and agriculture. Brazilian water security depends on the conservation of the Cerrado.

The Cerrado is recognized as one of the world's biodiversity hotspots , which are regions of the planet that are home to a huge variety of species (many of them unique), but which are severely threatened and under pressure due to the increasing destruction of their habitats.

Second Largest Biome in South America

The Cerrado is the second largest biome in South America, second only to the Amazon in territorial extension. It occupies just over 2 million km², almost 1/4 of the Brazilian territory, encompassing the states of the Central-West, part of the Northeast, Southeast and North of the country.
